Sales Tax: plunder of over Rs 10 billion unearthed

 

Customs Intelligence has registered cases against 4200 business units and 144 fake companies.

 

After a short fall in sales tax of millions of rupees it was discovered fake receipts of non-existents companies had been submitted. In the beginning a scam of Rs 172 millions surfaced but afterwards it turned out to be in access of Rs 10 billion.

 

Investigation agencies were taken aback to know that very prominent companies were stealing Sales Tax.

 

After some arrests, about Rs 1.5 billion were recovered while about 50 accused have moved the courts.

 

These companies have also claimed and received refund of Rs 350 million. About 70 accused have absconded and raids are being conducted to arrest them. Investigation agency has sought answers from the chief commissioners of Karachi and Lahore asking them why this scam was not reported.
 

Seoul to offer free wifi in public areas

The South Korean metropolis of Seoul would offer free wifi in outdoor spaces in a $44 million project to give residents and visitors Internet access on every street corner.

Demand for wifi is booming amid the rapid spread of smartphones and tablet computers but outdoor coverage in the South Korean capital has so far been limited. Seoul will make its network available in 10,430 parks, streets and other public places by 2015. All buses, subway trains and taxis in the city will be equipped to offer wireless Internet to passengers by the end of this year.

Wifi service is unavailable at 83 percent of outdoor areas in Seoul but it soon will be available at every street corner of the city.
 

Facebook users have great sense of social well-being

Facebook users are two and half times more likely to attend a political rally or meeting, 57 percent more likely to persuade someone on their vote, and 43 percent more likely to have said they would vote.

The emotional support and companionship that frequent Facebook users get is equivalent to about half the total support that the average American receives from a spouse or live-in partner.
 



Oil companies profit margin likely to increase

According to sources, due to the low profit ratio the oil companies had limited their business that ensued in the petrol shortage in the country.

Considering the situation, the government is planning to increase the profit margin of oil companies by Rs 0.50 per litre the source said.
 

The increase is likely to be applicable on petrol, diesel and kerosene oil prices.

 

Karachi: Two dacoits injured during dacoity attempt

 

According to police, an alleged dacoit Muhammad Hussain got injured by firing of a citizen during a dacoity attempt near Abdullah Girls College. Return fire from Muhammad Hussain resulted in injuries to his own accomplice Mustafa.

 

Both the injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaeed Hospital for treatment from where police have arrested them.
 

Lorashan Reds in Karachi Women Football Cship final

 

The Lorashan Reds outplayed Cristal Footbal Club 4-0 in the first semi-final of the Karachi Women Football Championship which was played at the KMC Ground.

 

Roshilba Farnandis scored a hat-trick for the winners while Mehwish Khan scored the fourth goal.

 

The second semifinal of the championship will be played today between Lorashan Blues and Karachi United.
 

Chile Extends Detention Of Pakistani in US Embassy Scare

SANTIAGO : Chilean authorities on Tuesday extended the detention of a Pakistani man found with traces of explosives as he visited the US embassy to discuss a revoked visa.

“I am innocent and I do not know why this is happening. I think it is the fault of the United States, where I wanted to go for a month. That’s why I went to the embassy,” the man, who police identified as Mauhannas Saif Ur Rehnab Khan, told reporters.

Rehnab, 28, denied any terrorist ties. “I have no idea what is happening here, but I imagine it has to do with what’s going on in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said. “I don’t know anything about bombs. I am a man who studies and works and I have nothing to do with that stuff,” he said.

Rehnab made the remarks to AFP as he was transferred in a police van to a hospital for a medical checkup ordered by Judge Ely Rothfield.

Rehnab said he had not had contact with the Pakistani embassy, or with Chilean authorities, or the prosecutor in the case, Francisco Jacir.

Under anti-terror laws the suspect can be detained until Saturday, court sources said.

Experts found traces of a TNT explosive derivative on the young suspect’s hands, cell phone, bag and documentation after he went through a security checkpoint on Monday, prompting embassy staff to notify police.

Rehnab insisted he did not know where the traces came from, and said that he was at the embassy only to renew his visa.

But a senior State Department official said in Washington Tuesday that the embassy had called Rehnab in after revoking his US visa. He would not say why the visa had been revoked.

State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said Rehnab had been called in “to clarify the information that we have on this individual.
