Karzai to visit Pakistan on June 10


 


According to a statement issued by Foreign Office, the Afghan president would visit Pakistan on June 10 and 11.


 


Karzai would meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusaf Raza Gilani.






 


President Zardari had invited President Karzai to visit Pakistan.


 


The foreign office stated that the Afghan president’s visit would help promote bilateral cooperation and friendship in future.
 






2 cops killed in Mastong blast


 


Remote control technique was used to hit the cops in which constable Babo Ali and cop Sheir Ahmad died on the spot while cop Syed Muhammad Shahi sustained injuries.






 


Officers of the department reached the spot and took the bodies into possession. Levis has registered case against unknown persons.
 






Indian journalist shot dead in Mumbai


Jyotirmoy Dey, 50, was killed at his home in the city s Powai district, and the gunmen escaped on motorcycles, police official said.
 


Dey led a team of crime and investigative reporters at the Mid Day newspaper and had written books on different gangs involved in organised crime in Mumbai.


"He brought depth to our investigative reporting, and he conducted his journalism with honesty and integrity," Sachin Kalbag, executive editor of Mid Day, said in a statement.
 






Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said the assassination was a challenge to the freedom of the press.
 


Prithviraj Chavan, Maharashtra chief minister, said the government was determined to track down the perpetrators.
Journalists’ organisation announced to stage protest against the klilling.


 






Ganga Dussera celebrated with religious fervour


Thousands of devotees and even tourists flocked at the various ghats (bathing locations) along the banks of Ganga River that passes through the city to take part in the religious rituals.






According to Hindu scriptures, Ganga River descended to earth from heaven on this day, and the devotees believe taking a dip in its waters leads to freedom for the devotees from the cycle of rebirth and attaining salvation.
 


Amid these religious rituals, many of the devotees expressed their concern over the polluted state of the Ganges.


 






Hot and dry weather predicted for next 24 hours

No let-up in Orangi Town: 7 more killed


 


Unidentified motorcyclists shot dead a man in Malir, while a man was also killed in Sadar area. Police had also recovered two bodies from Ghas Mandi and Niazi Chowk.






 


According to information, 28-year-old Sarwar was shot dead by some unidentified armed persons near Purani Anarkali while Jamal Uddin gunned down in Pir Colony.
 






Couple ties knot on Britans highest peak

UN separates sanctions for Al-Qaeda and Taliban


 


The United Nations Security Council has split the international sanctions regime for the Taliban and al-Qaeda to encourage the Taliban to join reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan.
 


The council unanimously passed two resolutions, which set up one new blacklist of individuals and organisations accused of links to


 


Al-Qaeda, and a second for those linked to the Taliban militia. Previously, for last 12 years the two groups were handled by the same sanctions committee.
 






However, the international powers wanted to separate them to highlight the divide between al-Qaeda s global jihadist agenda and the Taliban s focus on Afghanistan.
 


The sanctions committee was set up in 1999 when al-Qaeda had major bases in the Taliban, which ruled Afghanistan until they were driven out of power by United States-led forces.
 


The persons on UN sanctions list include 138 Taliban and 254 Al-Qaeda people.
 






Hague stresses in-depth Pak-UK strategic talks


 


He called on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar and discussed bilateral issues.


 


In a statement, Hague said the UK will take bilateral trade to 2.5 billion pounds by 2015.






 


He said that the US wants extensive strategic ties with Pakistan. He also took up the issue of slain journalist Saleem Shahzad.

OPEC meeting ends without results


Saudi Arabia faced resistance in Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) meeting on Wednesday as it could not convince member countries to increase the crude oil output.






The International Energy Agency on failure of the meeting expressed concern and said that the situation has created frustration in the world as the crude oil prices continue to increase in the world due to low production.
 






Mian Channu: 38-year-old man married to 10-year-old girl


A 38-year old man, who was married twice before, was married for a third time to a 10-year-old girl, Nasreen, in the Bismillah Town in Mian Channu.
 


According to the City Station Head Officer, A local resident Nisar Khan read the nikkah for a fee of Rs 1500. He said that Nisar Khan told the parents of the girl that she was only 10-year-old but the parents insisted that their daughter was 18-year-old, after which the nikkah was performed.






When the police asked the groom, he denied any such marriage but when the A PK News teams asked the neighbours, they said that these people marry their daughters at the age of 10 to 12 years.
 






Swami Ramdev ends hunger strike


Ramdev, who has been on a hunger strike, initially at New Delhi and later at Haridwar, was admitted to the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust located near Dehradun on Friday, after his health had deteriorated.






He began an indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi on June 4 in a bid to trigger government action on the repatriation of estimated $8.94 trillion worth of black money stashed in offshore accounts.
 


However, he was evicted by police during pre-dawn hours on Sunday and renewed his protest in Haridwar.


 






Rain relieves people from heat


The Pakistan Meteorological Department predicted more rain in Islamabad, Kashmir and upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab with strong wind.  


According to the PMD, a new western air system entered the upper parts of the country that would bring a new spell of rain in upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Punjab with lighting and thunder.






 


Rain was recorded in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and Malakand division.


 


The lower areas of Rawalpindi were by with rain water.


 


Temperature dropped in various cities of Punjab after last night’s rain and gust.  


 






105 killed in China floods, landslides


The government officials say that 105 people have been killed and 63 are missing as floods across 13 provinces have damaged thousands of hectares of crops while landslides and mud have damaged hundreds of homes and buildings.






 


So far, more than 3000 people have been shifted to safer places while Meteorological Department has warned that more rains are likely to continue.


 






Karachities in want of potable water


 


The population of Karachi is increasing at a rate of five percent per annum but volume of water supply could not be maintained accordingly. The people have to been obliged to drink salty water, which causes many diseases.






 


About 650 million gallon water per day is being supplied to the city, but another one billion gallon water is required. People alleged that the water meant for the city is sold in sold in black market.
 






Afridi fined Rs 4.5 million on violating code of conduct


 


The PCB’s disciplinary committee has decided to issue him NOC NOCs (No-Objection Certificates) to play abroad while Afridi was satisfied with the decision.
 


Shahid Afridi appeared before the committee at National Cricket Academy Lahore in a pleasant mood.
 


Talking to media during the interval, Afridi said that that he admitted his mistake but would not apologize.

Sialkot: Iqbals school in dilapidated condition


 


The building of Government High School Gandum Mandi is in dilapidated condition.
 


A room and wall of the school have collapsed due to recent monsoon rains. No attention was paid to the 147-year-old building.
 






Residents of the area said that Sialkot would be deprived of a monument of the national hero if it was not repaired.
 


It is worth mentioning that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had also declared this school a national asset and announced to build Iqbal Gallery after renovation of the building.
 






Obama meets with soldiers returning from Afghanistan


Addressing the soldiers, President Obama said supported the decision to withdraw the troops from Afghanistan and said that the gradual withdrawal would not put to waste the target that the US forces have achieved in Afghanistan.






President Obama said that the responsibilities of the US have ended in Afghanistan. The gradual withdrawal is to show that the US wants a sovereign Afghanistan.

Speeding truck kills 18 Muslims in India


 


The Muslims were on their way to a festival at a shrine 90 kilometres from Ahmedabad, when they stopped near a highway cafe to rest for the night.


 


"In total 18 people have died, including nine women. Ten others are injured," a Gujarat police official who declined to be named told AFP.






 


"All the pilgrims were travelling on foot. Sixteen people died on the spot when the truck ran over them, and another two people died at a local hospital," he said.
 






Punjab forgets to take supplementary budget permission


In the summary sent to the Governor Punjab Latif Khosa by the Punjab government, presentation orders for the budget of the next fiscal year were received in June 7.


The provincial Finance Minister presents that the budget for the new financial year along with the supplementary budget for the last financial year to the assembly but in the summary, the Punjab Government forgot to take permission to present from the supplementary budget from the Governor Punjab Latif Khosa.






The Punjab government then sent another summary to the governor house but the since the governor was in Islamabad, orders for the supplementary budget were received through fax.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that until the establishment of a just society and sharia, the country cannot get rid of terrorism.   


Addressing a ceremony held at the second death anniversary of noted religious scholar Sarfraz Naeemi, Shahbaz said that the nation must make Pakistan a hub of Islam.


He said that drone attacks were augmenting terrorism, instead of curbing it.

The competition looked for the yo-yo that would reach the highest point after being released from a 100-foot (30 meters) tall crane. The idea with the yo-yo was to convert the potential energy to angular momentum of the yo-yo. The winner of the competition designed and built a small and sleek yo-yo, resembling an automobile s flywheel.






The engraved yo-yo scored highest marks after the judges calculated the height of its initial ascent. The winning team received 3,000 U.S. dollars for winning the competition.
 






Quetta: Former boxing Olympian Abrar Hussain gunned down

The police raided the school, arrested the supervising staff with 70 students and seized the books being used in cheating. Police also recovered Rs 24,000 from Deputy Superintendent Raja Abid and Rs 4000 from Principal Hammad-ur-Rehman. The latter was also arrested.

Super 8 opening one day early in Twitter promo


In order to create an online buzz "Super 8" will come out in movie theaters one day ahead of scheduled date. It is an art of a promotional campaign targeted at Twitter users. Users can click on the link to buy movie tickets online, and get free popcorn.






The promotion marks the first time Twitter has hosted a sneak preview. "Super 8" could do with a promotional boost although early comments have been favorable. But with no big stars and a trailer that does not show the sci-fi alien creature around whom the film revolves, the buzz for the picture has hardly been deafening.  This is a new technique for creating curiosity among the audiences.

Attock: Man kills wife over family dispute


 


According to reports, Saqib Shehzad, an employee of a sensitive agency, strangulated his wife on a family dispute allegedly with the help of his parents and brother in the jurisdiction of Airport Police Station in Paswal area near Attock. The deceased was also subjected to torture.






 


Police have registered the case and arrested mother-in-law and father-in-law of the deceased.
 






Youth drowns in Ravi River


 


As per detail, Syed Muhammad Ashfaq, student of intermediate, went to Ravi River for swimming with his friends.


 






When they reached near Bara Dari, he started drowning. His friends tried their best to save him but could not bring him out. As a result, he drowned while search for his dead body is yet underway.
 






3 members of a China flood victim family saved


 


Torrential rains in the regions of Hubei and Hunan, two provinces hardest hit by the flooding, have killed 94 people, 78 missed and left thousands stranded.


 


Precipitation reached record levels in the province s Tongcheng county, state media said, topping a 200 year high, of 300 millimetres within four hours.






 


Over 60,000 residents were evacuated from Hubei s Xianing city, while nearly 100,000 people were stranded by floods in three of Xianning s counties. In Chongyang, more than 200 school children were left stranded after a flood engulfed their primary school.


 






Women forced to parade naked in Pakhtunkhwa


 


One of the offenders had accused the woman s son of having illicit relations with his wife, the police said. Such incident is rare in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Police said villagers where the incident took place did not try to stop it because the offenders were armed.


 


Haripur district police chief Mohammad Ali Gandapur told the that a resident of Nilor Bala village had complained to village elders that two men had had sexual relations with his wife.


 






According to the police, a village council advised the complainant to divorce his wife.


 


Instead, he and four armed men stormed the house belonging to the mother of one of the men alleged to have slept with his wife in order to kill her son. Because the son was not there, the men dragged the mother out, stripped her and made her walk through the village, the police said.


 


They have now registered a case against seven people, but only two have been arrested so far. They say they are looking for other offenders.

Mental health problems are the leading cause of disability


According to a new study mental health problems are the leading cause of disability among children, teens and young adults worldwide.
Neuropsychiatric disorders — including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and alcohol use — accounted for 45 percent of the disease burden among those 10 to 24 years old. The next two most common causes of disability among young people were accidental injuries, most often caused by traffic accidents. Incidence rises sharply in late adolescence and early adulthood for alcohol. For other risk factors that commonly start in adolescence, such as tobacco use, low physical activity, high blood pressure, and overweight and obesity.
The researchers also found that important risk factors among young people that affect their health later in life include alcohol use, iron deficiency and lack of birth control.

Hostages likely to be released soon: Burney


 


He said that Pakistani and Indian hostages would be brought back after delivering Egyptians and Sri Lankans in their respective countries.
Human rights activist Ansar Burney said that the hostages would be released within two or three days.

Accused Rangers officials to be presented in court today


The Rangers officials, who brutally murdered a young man in Benazir Park in Karachi, will be presented before a special court on Monday for further remand.


 


According to sources, Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) has been incorporated in the case in compliance with the Supreme Court orders.


 






Section 7 of the ATA specifies that whoever commits an act of terrorism whereby the death of any person is caused, shall be punishable, on conviction, with death or with imprisonment for life, and with a fine.


 


Talking to the media, DIG West Sultan Khawaja refused to comment when asked if he was being pressurised from Rangers authorities.

Facebook 2012 IPO could peak $100 billion


Social network Facebook is likely to go public in the first quarter of next year with a valuation of over $100 billion.






Facebook s decision to conduct an initial public offering could be triggered by Securities and Exchange Commission requirement that companies with more than 500 private investors must disclose financial information. Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly shown interest in delaying the public offering but it has been forced to do so by Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations. Facebook is also facing pressure from employees who are not allowed to sell their shares on private exchanges such as SharesPost, where Facebook has been given a valuation of as high as $85 billion.


Facebook requires private companies to release quarterly financial reports like public companies.


 






Opposition demands cuts in President, PMs expenditures


 


Opposition has demanded decrease in the expenditures of President and the Prime Minister.


 


Participating in the budget debate, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said that the proposal to cut expenditures of billions of rupees spent on President and PM’s foreign tours should be included in the budget.

Terrorist attempt foiled in Karachi


 


Talking to the media, Karachi Chief Capital Police Officer (CCPO) Iqbal Mehmood said that a remote-controlled bomb, weighing 15-20 kilogramme, was planted in residential colony of the Jinnah Hospital.






However, the bomb disposal squad was called in which defused the bomb.


 


He said that the police have started investigations.

Relations with Pakistan complicated: Robert Gates


 


Speaking at the NATO meeting on Afghanistan in Brussels, Gates said that there would not be any hasty withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
 


U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday that there would be no hasty U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and Washington expected the same from its allies.
 


Gates, speaking ahead of the start of President Barack Obama s planned troop cuts in Afghanistan next month, said a  rush to the exits  would jeopardise military Afghanistan.
 






On relationships with Pakistan, Gates said,   The Pakistani relationship has been complicated for a long time. The Pakistanis in essence believe that we have betrayed them on at least four different occasions."
 


"Persuading them that this time we really mean, that we really are going to stay engaged, that we really are not going to abandon them to whatever might happen in Afghanistan and that their interest will be taken into account,” Gates added.
 






Volcano eruption causes evacuations in Chile


A volcano erupted in south-central Chile, prompting authorities to evacuate about 3,500 residents of the Los Rios region and other surrounding areas. The ash cloud blew over the Andes and carpeted a popular ski resort in neighboring Argentina.


 






The eruption occurred in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain but it was not immediately clear which of the chain s four volcanoes had erupted because of ash cover and weather conditions. The chain last saw a major eruption in 1960.


 


Chilean authorities said the eruption formed a column of smoke that was 5 kilometres (about 3.1 miles) wide and 10 kilometres (about 6.2 miles) tall. The volcano was spitting molten rock, but there was no visible lava flow.


 






Sindh defers review petition against removal of IGP, Rangers DG


 


The Sindh government has decided to defer the filing of a review petition against the Supreme Court order that the Ranges director general and the Sindh inspector general of police should be removed within three days.


 


Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered the removal of the two officials after a team of Rangers officials killed an innocent teenager in Benazir Park, Karachi.






 


According to Sindh Attorney General Fateh Malik, the appeal has been postponed on the advice of Pakistan People’s Party leader Babar Awan.


 


Malik said that the appeal would be filed once the investigations process into the killing was completed. He said that the Supreme Court orders would be implemented.


 






Zardari termed US as safety blanket: WikiLeaks


 


President Asif Ali Zardari termed America as his safety blanket and admitted the US role in the return of Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan, reveals WikiLeaks.


 


According to a cable which the US ambassador sent to Washington, the deputy secretary general of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) contacted different factions of the Pakistan Muslim League, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and even the army to get Zardari elected as a president.






 


The ambassador wrote that the PPP kept pending everything until the election of Zardari as the president.


 


In a message sent to Washington on 2008, the US ambassador wrote that Zardari termed US as his safety blanket and also talked about the US role in Benazir’s return to Pakistan.


 


Separately, WikiLeaks revealed that Law Minister Farooq A Naek wrote a document seeking exemption for Pervez Musharraf.


 






Pakistan arrests CIA moles in Osama raid: US media


 


The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has arrested some of the Pakistani informants who fed information to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) leading to Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, claims the US media quoting officials.


 


Five CIA informants, including a Pakistani Army major, have been arrested, report The New York Times. The major is said to be monitoring cars visiting Bin Laden’s compound in weeks before the US operation.


 






The latest move came at a time when both the countries were trying to mend their battered relations and the Obama administration claimed it was seeking Islamabad’s support in brokering an end to war in Afghanistan.


 


CIA chief Leon Panetta had raised the issue when he visited Islamabad last week to discuss pressing issues with civil and military leadership in Pakistan. 


 


Panetta also tried to get permission to expand drone operations to wider areas of the tribal regions, but the US was preparing relocate drones from Pakistan to Afghanistan.
 






Third test: Sri Lanka on 81/4 in rain affected day 1

Fans turn violent after defeat in ice-hockey match


 


The ice-hockey fans turned violent in Vancouver after the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup final to the Boston Bruins.


 






Thousands of people jammed into the heart of downtown in the hopes of celebrating a Vancouver win but after the Bruins emerged with a 4-0 victory to claim the Cup the post-game scene brought back memories of a riot that erupted when Vancouver also lost the Stanley Cup to the New York Rangers in 1994.


 


The police were called to control the situation, but violent fans put on fire many buildings and cars.
 






Sarfraz Murder case: Challan submitted before anti-terrorism court


 


DIG west handed over the challan to Special Prosecutor Arshid Iqbal, who presented the challan before the court.

Khanpure: Boy injured in acid attack


 


According to reports, 12-year-old Azhar was flying his pet pigeon at his roof when some dispute arises with Mujahid and Asif who threw acid on him. He was critically injured in the acid attack.


 






Azhar was taken to District Headquarters Hospital for treatment but was referred to Rahim Yar Khan. A large part of his body was burnt in the attack. Locals nabbed Mujahid and Asif and handed them to police.

10 more killed in Karachi, death toll reaches 22


 


The Orangi Town is the most affected area in the recent wave of target killing in Karachi.


 


According to police, nine more people, including two children, have been shot dead in target killing by unidentified miscreants.


 


The two children, 13-year-old Wajid and 14-year-old Usman, were shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Qasba Colony. In another incident near Shaheen Hotel, 30-year-old Nazar Muhammad fell victim to target killing while and unknown man was shot dead near Qasba Colony.






 


In yet another incident, unidentified miscreants shot dead a man, Mukhtar, near water pump.


 


According to the residents, law enforcement agencies have failed to maintain law and order in the area and at least 21 people have been shot dead in two days in different incidents of violence and target killing in the area.
 






Governor, CM step in to resolve KESC-employees tussle


 


A 9-member committee, comprising major political parties, has been formed for talks with Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) administration and workers union to resolve the issue.






 


Rashid Rabbani of the Pakistan People’s Party, Wasim Aftab of Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Rana Gul Afridi would lead representatives of political parties during the talks.

4 dead as car fell into ditch in Mohmand Agency


The occupants of the vehicle were going back to Charsadda after attending an urs ceremony when their car fell into a ditch in Prang Ghar area.






According to the local authorities, the incidents left four people dead, besides injuring seven others.


The injured were moved to hospitals in Peshawar and Tangi and were said to be out of danger.


 






Oil prices shrink by 4 percent in a day


Oil prices have tumbled after a surprise move by the International Energy Agency to open its emergency reserves on the market.


Experts said the move was ‘firing a shot across the bows’ of the Arab dominated oil cartel OPEC whose actions have been keeping prices high.


The IEA said the move was about helping ease an oil shortage not prices, but it comes just weeks after the OPEC cartel failed to agree an increase in production to help ease the rising oil price.






The crude oil prices shrank by $5.72 a barrel but soon the market recovered the drop and witnessed some gain.


The future deals for crude oil in the Asian markets were made at $91.27 a barrel while the price of a barrel in London market was $106.80.


The crude oil prices have seen a drop of more than $10 in the ongoing month.

Karachi: Shahi syed criticises MQM


 


Holding a press conference in Karachi, Shahi Syed said that MQM always blackmailed the government and engaged itself in the politics of dead bodies and strikes.
 






Shahi demanded that judicial investigation should be made regarding criminal incidents which occurred during last 2 days.
 


He said that the army operation should be launched and ANP would present itself first of all for the investigation.
 






Punjab forgets to take supplementary budget permission


In the summary sent to the Governor Punjab Latif Khosa by the Punjab government, presentation orders for the budget of the next fiscal year were received in June 7.


The provincial Finance Minister presents that the budget for the new financial year along with the supplementary budget for the last financial year to the assembly but in the summary, the Punjab Government forgot to take permission to present from the supplementary budget from the Governor Punjab Latif Khosa.






The Punjab government then sent another summary to the governor house but the since the governor was in Islamabad, orders for the supplementary budget were received through fax.

Iran protests against FIFA


 


Iran condemned the decision taken by the ruling football body FIFA to deny its women’s football team playing a 2012 Olympics qualifier in Jordan because of the players’ Islamic outfits.


 






FIFA cancelled Friday’s game in Amman and declared Jordan 3-0 winners after the Iranian authorities refused their players to remove their headscarves and track suits. Women in Iran are obliged to respect the hijab and wear a long gown and scarf to conceal body contours and hair in public.


 


Iranian sportswomen, including the football team, have to keep the hijab in international competition, too.

State Bank withdraws Rs 34.5 billion from market


 


The central bank sold T-bills under a three-day repurchase agreement to withdraw additional capital from the market. Interest of 12.04 was agreed on T-bills.


 






Primary dealers had offered to buy T-bills worth Rs 40 billion. After the announcement of budget, the State Bank so far has sold T-bills worth Rs 46 billion through three open market operations.
 






Somali pirates again attempted to hijack ship


 


Talking to A PK News, social activist Ansar Burney said that a group of pirates attacked Capt Wasi’s ship at 8:00am today. However, after a two-hour exchange of fire their attempt to hijack the ship had been foiled.


 






He informed that Capt Wasi and his crew remained unharmed during the attack and the ship is heading towards safer region. He also appealed to the nation to pray for safe return of the recently-released captives.


 


According to information, four Pakistanis and 18 other people are onboard the ship. The four Pakistanis, including Capt Wasi are third engineer Sayed Alam, deisel mechanic Muzammil and a resident of Swat, Ali Rehan.

Load shedding goes up to 10 hours in Karachi


The faults in the electrical system in Karachi are not being fixed due to dispute that has been going on between the Karachi Electrical Supply Company (KESC) and its workers for about two months now. As a result, the electricity shortfall has started to increase and planned load shedding has gone up to 10 hours while the unannounced load shedding has gone beyond 14 hours.  People in Karachi are facing a consecutive outage of 4 to six hour s at night.
 










Brothers land in jail after Shampoo clash


An incident starting as an argument about shampoo ended with the arrests of two brothers for disorderly conduct.


Police responded to Sheboygan home on a report of a disturbance and found Jonathan Pippert arguing with his brother in the front lawn. Pippert, 32, and his brother, Jared Pippert, 27, both had scrapes and bruises on their upper bodies. The brothers told police they fought after Jonathan took a bottle of shampoo from Jared s room, but each brother claimed the other started the fight.






Jonathan Pippert is facing up to two years in jail due to prior convictions and Jared Pippert is facing up to 90 days.


 






11 dead 27 injured in Ormara road accident


A passenger coach, going Mand from Karachi, overturned due to over speeding near Ormara on Coastal Highway, leaving 11 people dead and 27 injured.


The rescue workers have shifted the injured to hospitals in Ormara and Karachi.






 


Former education minister Zubaida Jalal’s brother Khalid Rind is also among the dead while her sister Rahima Jalal got critically injured.
All the deceased belong to Mand.

Iraq beat arch rivals Iran 2-0 in the second leg of Olympic qualifying match played at the Azadi Football Stadium, Teheran.


 


Both the goals were scored by Amjad Razi. Iran had defeated Iraq 1-0 in the first leg of qualifiers.






 


Iraq qualified to play the third round of the qualifiers on better goal difference.


 


The schedule of 12-team third round has been announced which will kick off on July 7.

Two political workers gunned down in Karachi


At least two people were killed when two armed men opened fire in the Shah Faisal Colony in Karachi. According to the police, the victims have been identified as Arif and Zeeshan. Police claim to have arrested both the accused.






On the other hand, angry protestors torched the residence of the accused in Khan Goth police precincts. A spokesperson for the Awami National party (ANP) confirmed that both the victims were ANP workers.








Michael unveils Rs 655 billion Punjab budget


 


Provincial Minority Affairs Minister Kamran Michael, with additional charge of finance, is currently presenting the budget amid rumpus by opposition parties in the Punjab Assembly.


Earlier, the Punjab cabinet approved the provincial budget of Rs 655 billion for the fiscal year 2011-12 in a meeting today.
 


According to sources, a development programme of Rs 220 billion will be unveiled in the province, while Rs 20 billion will be allocated for the district governments.


 


The education sector in Punjab is likely to get Rs 23.9 billion while the agriculture development budget will be around Rs 3.4 billion. At least Rs 9 billion will be spent in the energy sector.






 


At least 10,000 new employment opportunities will be created in education, health and police departments.


 


A ban will be imposed on the construction of new government buildings and residences for the government officers. 


 


Rs 30 billion will be allocated for poverty alleviation programme and Rs 4 billion will be earmarked for Ramazan package. Punjab’s current account revenue is Rs 438 billion.


 


Token tax up to 1300cc vehicles is increased by Rs 1,000 while token fee on vehicles will be increased from Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800.


 






Daska: Two women killed as van falls into canal


 


As per details, the van fell into BRB Canal when the driver of the van tried to save a motorcyclist.
 






Resultantly, Shumaila and her nice Quratul Ain drowned while husband of Shumaila and her daughter were rescued.

Witnesses recognise all accused in Sarfaraz Shah murder case


 


The witnesses recognised all the Rangers officials, who had killed an innocent teenager, Sarfaraz Shah, in broad daylight in Benazir Park, Karachi, last week.


 


According to eye-witness, the accused brought the victim to Rangers officials while holding him by hair.


 


The victim was asking for forgiveness and begged for life, but Shahid Zafar opened fired at him, injuring him seriously, an eye-witness said.






 


He said that he did not know whether the victim had done anything wrong. He said that Sarfaraz received serious wounds and was crying in pain, but no one helped him.


 


During the identification parade, the accused were allowed to make counter arguments with the witnesses.
 






16 injured in NATO air strikes in Libya


 


A spokesman of the rebels said that 16 people were injured in the NATO airstrikes in village Amreer Gabes, 30 kilometre away from Ajdabiyah.


 






On the other hand, Gaddafi s son Saif al-Islam told an Italian newspaper in an interview that his father was willing to hold elections and step aside if he lost but would never leave Libya.
 






Junior Asia Hockey Cup begins today


 


At least nine Asian teams will take part in the 10-day event, which kicks off today. Teams from Pakistan, South Korea, Malaysia, China, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore are participating in the tournament.

NATO air strikes leave 7 dead in Tripoli


 


According to a government spokesman, a residential locality in Arada area of Tripoli was targeted in the NATO raids.


 


Reporters were taken by Libyan government officials to the residential area destroyed during the attack.


 






Talking to reporters, Libyan deputy foreign minister Khaled Kaim said that civilians are being intentionally targeted by the NATO forces. The reporter were also witnessed a body being pulled out of the rubble of a destroyed building


 


At a local hospital, reporters were shown three bodies, including a child, which government officials said were people who had been killed in the air strike.


 


According to a reporter, Arada is known for anti-Gaddafi sentiment.






7.3-magnitude earthquake shakes Alaska


 


According to the US Geological Survey, an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked coastal area of Alaska at 6:09 am local time.


 






The US officials have issued a tsunami warning immediately in coastal town Atka and its suburbs. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Interrupted petrol supply troubles people


The petrol is being sold as high as Rs 125 per litre in various cities as the acute shortage of fuel is being observed after the halt in supply from the Attock Oil Refinery due to some technical faults.


Long queues of vehicles were seen on CNG stations following the resumption of gas supply after the weekly suspension of two days.
 






Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani ordered the Pakistan State Oil to import 50,000 tonnes extra fuel to overcome the shortage.
 


The Petroleum Ministry claimed that the scarcity would be diminished in two days.
 


Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority issued notice to the Attock Oil Refinery, asking them to restore their routine supplies.

Yellow Cab scheme launched again


 


In the first PML-N government, Yellow cab scheme was introduced for the unemployed youth and Rs 50 billion was borrowed from banks to run the scheme. Thousands of vehicles including luxury cars were also imported and later were exported to earn profit. More vehicles were given to political activists. The loan, which was obtained for the scheme resulted in the default of Allied Bank and Habib Bank and public money was used to save the banks.






 


Cut in customs duties also affected the economy. Local auto industry also suffered due to the imported vehicles and no investment was made in this sector during the next 5-years.
 






Hot spell continues across Pakistan


 


Hot spell continued across the country as temperature rose to 41 Celsius in Bahawalpur at 10am on Monday.


 






According to the Met Office, 40 Celsius temperature was recorded in Rahimyar Khan, 39 Celsius in Jhang, 38 Celsius in Khuzdar, Jhelum and Hyderabad, 37 Celsius in Dera Ghazi Khan, Mangla, Multan and Faisalabad, 36 Celsius in Lahore and Sahiwal, 35 Celsius in Peshawar and 34 Celsius in Karachi.
 






Sales Tax: plunder of over Rs 10 billion unearthed


 


Customs Intelligence has registered cases against 4200 business units and 144 fake companies.


 


After a short fall in sales tax of millions of rupees it was discovered fake receipts of non-existents companies had been submitted. In the beginning a scam of Rs 172 millions surfaced but afterwards it turned out to be in access of Rs 10 billion.


 


Investigation agencies were taken aback to know that very prominent companies were stealing Sales Tax.






 


After some arrests, about Rs 1.5 billion were recovered while about 50 accused have moved the courts.


 


These companies have also claimed and received refund of Rs 350 million. About 70 accused have absconded and raids are being conducted to arrest them. Investigation agency has sought answers from the chief commissioners of Karachi and Lahore asking them why this scam was not reported.
 






Seoul to offer free wifi in public areas


The South Korean metropolis of Seoul would offer free wifi in outdoor spaces in a $44 million project to give residents and visitors Internet access on every street corner.






Demand for wifi is booming amid the rapid spread of smartphones and tablet computers but outdoor coverage in the South Korean capital has so far been limited. Seoul will make its network available in 10,430 parks, streets and other public places by 2015. All buses, subway trains and taxis in the city will be equipped to offer wireless Internet to passengers by the end of this year.


Wifi service is unavailable at 83 percent of outdoor areas in Seoul but it soon will be available at every street corner of the city.

The emotional support and companionship that frequent Facebook users get is equivalent to about half the total support that the average American receives from a spouse or live-in partner.
