Michael unveils Rs 655 billion Punjab budget


 


Provincial Minority Affairs Minister Kamran Michael, with additional charge of finance, is currently presenting the budget amid rumpus by opposition parties in the Punjab Assembly.


Earlier, the Punjab cabinet approved the provincial budget of Rs 655 billion for the fiscal year 2011-12 in a meeting today.
 


According to sources, a development programme of Rs 220 billion will be unveiled in the province, while Rs 20 billion will be allocated for the district governments.


 


The education sector in Punjab is likely to get Rs 23.9 billion while the agriculture development budget will be around Rs 3.4 billion. At least Rs 9 billion will be spent in the energy sector.






 


At least 10,000 new employment opportunities will be created in education, health and police departments.


 


A ban will be imposed on the construction of new government buildings and residences for the government officers. 


 


Rs 30 billion will be allocated for poverty alleviation programme and Rs 4 billion will be earmarked for Ramazan package. Punjab’s current account revenue is Rs 438 billion.


 


Token tax up to 1300cc vehicles is increased by Rs 1,000 while token fee on vehicles will be increased from Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800.
