CRC Agrees To Form Panel For Judges Appointment

ISLAMABAD Pakistan News: Parliament's Constitutional Reforms Committee on Tuesday agreed on the formation of a parliamentary committee to carry out future appointments in the judiciary,? The committee, met here with its chairman Mian Raza Rabbani in chair, discussed the criteria for the appointments of judges in Supreme Court and four high courts and reviewed various related articles and clauses of the Constitution.

It was agreed that an eight-member parliamentary committee will be formulated to scrutinize names and credentials of the judges forwarded by the law ministry officials and will recommend those to the Presidency for the approval.

Earlier, the committee in its last week’s sittings had failed to achieve a consensus on the method, suggested originally in the Charter of Democracy (CoD) signed by Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz in 2007.

Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) and Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan had opposed the formation of the committee for judges appointment. However, the two parties retreated from their stand in Tuesday's meeting, paving the way for a consensual approval of the suggestion.

The committee will have eight members – four each from Senate and National Assembly – equally representing the treasury and opposition benches.

The committee is likely to wrap up its recommendations by March 23, which will later be tabled in the form of a constitutional reforms package before the Parliament for debate and approval.
