Hunza Lake Likely To Overflow in Few Hours

Hunza Lake Likely To Overflow in Few HoursThe distance between water and spillway at Attabad lake is reducing sharply and the outflow is likely to occur tomorrow.

Amid possibility of water outflow, Hunza authorities have closed Gilgit-Hunza section of Karkoram Highway for traffic and the helicopter service have been suspended. Article 144 has been imposed in the area to stop people travelling to the lower areas of the lake.

Civil and army officials are monitoring the situation around spillway through satellite cameras, and sirens will be sounded half an hour prior to the outflow of water. Red flags would also be raised in case of flooding and announcements would be made in the mosques of surrounding areas.

More areas of Gilgit and Shishkat have been inundated and road link between Gilgit and Hunza has also been blocked.

Chief Secretary Gilgit Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad said with the blockage of Karakoram and other roads, no food shortage is seen in the area.
