Speaking at the NATO meeting on Afghanistan in Brussels, Gates said that there would not be any hasty withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday that there would be no hasty U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and Washington expected the same from its allies.
Gates, speaking ahead of the start of President Barack Obama s planned troop cuts in Afghanistan next month, said a rush to the exits would jeopardise military Afghanistan.
On relationships with Pakistan, Gates said, The Pakistani relationship has been complicated for a long time. The Pakistanis in essence believe that we have betrayed them on at least four different occasions."
"Persuading them that this time we really mean, that we really are going to stay engaged, that we really are not going to abandon them to whatever might happen in Afghanistan and that their interest will be taken into account,” Gates added.
