Volcano eruption causes evacuations in Chile

A volcano erupted in south-central Chile, prompting authorities to evacuate about 3,500 residents of the Los Rios region and other surrounding areas. The ash cloud blew over the Andes and carpeted a popular ski resort in neighboring Argentina.

The eruption occurred in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain but it was not immediately clear which of the chain s four volcanoes had erupted because of ash cover and weather conditions. The chain last saw a major eruption in 1960.

Chilean authorities said the eruption formed a column of smoke that was 5 kilometres (about 3.1 miles) wide and 10 kilometres (about 6.2 miles) tall. The volcano was spitting molten rock, but there was no visible lava flow.
