Pakistan News Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that the floods exacted losses of around billions of rupees, adding that the provincial government is fully aware of its responsibility.
Talking to Dunya News during a visit to the flood torn areas of Rahim Yar Khan on Monday, Shahbaz said 'the government is utilizing all of its resources regarding the rescue efforts. He said that Rs10billion have been earmarked for the rehabilitation of flood victims.
He also urged federal government to give Rs25billion in relief fund to the Punjab government to help it cope the aftermath of the calamity. Shahbaz said the unprecedented catastrophe rendered thousands of people homeless while the destruction is unimaginable. He maintained that free media is vital for strengthening of democracy, and added that to gag the former is equal to harm democracy in the country.
Shahbaz can give Rs25b for flood victims: Salman Taseer
Referring to the appeal by Shahbaz Sharif for Rs 25 billion as relief fund, Taseer said that Shahbaz Sharif has enough money: 12 billion from the food stamp scheme and the remaining from the subsidies and else. He added that the first priority of the government should be the provision of aid and other necessary items to the flood victims. Talking to Dunya News at Multan Airport on Monday, Salman said that he is getting a C130 loaded with aid for the affectees. He said people badly need food not tents, and added that the government should take steps for rehabilitation of affectees. He said that aid from other countries has started pouring in and efforts are on to provide them to the needy at the earliest.
