Pakistan News: Various natural and man made hurdles slow down the water flow in Indus river due to which the river is flowing at snail's pace. Former Secretary Irrigation Sindh Idrees Rajput said that silt has blocked has deposited at the river bed which creates resistance in flow of water.
Secondly, people residing in Kacha areas have constructed mud bunds to secure the cultivated areas. These bunds hamper water flow to great extent.
He maintained that two bridges namely Dadu- Moro Bridge and Khairpur- Larkana Bridge have created bottlenecks of only 4000 feet as compared to the river bed of 10 to 12 miles.
The river flow has slowed down from Sukkur to Kotri due to these bridges.
He said that the rains occurred abruptly in this rainy season. The last super flood i.e. more than 900,000 cusecs of water passed through barrages in 1995 and after that water flow remained less during the last fourteen years so the standard required to contain floods was not there.
He pointed out that the workers of irrigation department should have worked efficiently on this issue before the flood, the embankments should have watched and maintained constantly by patrolling parties.
He told that The Right Bank Outfall Drain (RBOD) has been constructed by constructing bunds. These bunds are newly constructed and there is fear of breach.
Huge bunds have been constructed at Kaity Jatoi to save crops but the bunds have been severed and now flow is faster.
The water blow out of Larkana-Sehwan bund but it has been contained. There are chances of blockade of National Highway.
The Indus highway has been inundated and water is heading to wards different cities of Sindh, he said.
