Debate in Syria Over Ban On Veil

Debate in Syria Over Ban On Veil Syria has banned the niqab from its private and public universities in an effort to protect the country's secular identity. The ban does not affect the hijab, the head scarf that does not cover the face, which many Syrian women wear.

A loud and controversial debate continues in different Syrian universities over the ban imposed by the government. A scuffle broke between government MPs over the ban. The Education Minister Ghaith Barakat has issued a decree banning women on university campuses from wearing veils that cover their faces.

It is pertinent to mention that Syria quietly imposed the curb on veil on Sunday.
